Meet the Ghanaian-American Woman Rewriting the Rules of Women’s Basketball

Ashley Koranteng, a 28-year-old Ghanaian-American visionary from Virginia, is making waves as the youngest owner and general manager in the Women’s American Basketball Association (WABA).

As the founder of Virginia Vitesse, the only semi-professional women’s basketball team in Loudoun County and all of Northern Virginia, she is not just building a team – she’s building a movement.

Koranteng, who entered ownership at the age of 27, stands as the only Ghanaian-American woman in the United States to own a professional women’s basketball team.

Since launching Virginia Vitesse in July 2025, she’s already amassed over 150,000 digital impressions, creating a major buzz online and within the WABA league.

With home games drawing record-breaking attendance, Koranteng is redefining what women’s semi-professional basketball can look like polished, powerful, and poised for growth.

From the name to the uniforms, every detail of Virginia Vitesse is a reflection of her creativity and cultural pride.

The team’s branding and logo were thoughtfully crafted in partnership with Ghanaian-owned and operated brand Clockwork, a nod to her commitment to uplifting and collaborating with fellow Ghanaians around the world.

The Vitesse logo tells a deeper story:

The black star is a tribute to the Ghanaian flag and symbolizes strength and heritage.

Inside the star sits a basketball, blending culture with sport.

The state of Virginia is subtly embedded within the “V,” rooting the team in local identity.

The color palette is intentional: Yellow represents warmth, royalty, and wealth; Red conveys power and resilience.

The font is bold yet subtly feminine, underscoring the grace and grit of the women who wear the jersey

Virginia Vitesse lives by the tagline “Elevate the Game,” and Koranteng is doing just that not just for her team, but for the entire semi-professional women’s basketball landscape.

Her mission is to provide a professional, empowering, and elite environment for women athletes, challenging the norms of semi-pro ball and creating a product that looks and feels ready for the WNBA.

This is more than basketball. This is a new era one led by a Ghanaian woman with vision, discipline, and the heart to build something that lasts. Virginia Vitesse is inviting the global Ghanaian community to stand with her as she elevates the game, one basket, one story, and one groundbreaking season at a time.
