The side effects of excessive intake of cloves

Cloves are a popular natural remedy known for their culinary and medicinal purposes, from aiding digestion and even promoting hair growth. But health experts are raising concerns about the risks associated with excessive consumption.

According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, eugenol the main compound in  clove oil can be toxic in high doses, with one of the most serious side effects being kidney damage.


Some  individuals who regularly use cloves shared their reasons, methods of use, and benefits.

“I use cloves to prepare food, because it makes my food smell nice.” Kelvin Donkor said.“I also boil it , pour it in a bottle and spray it in my hair which enables my hair growth and I also drink it to help aid in digestion ,” Wendy Owusu  shared.

Despite these traditional uses, doctors are urging caution.

Dr. Wilson Addae, a medical officer at the Mother of God hospital, explains that while cloves have health benefits, excessive intake can affect the kidneys.
