At first glance, beads may appear to be simple ornaments, worn to complement an outfit or add color to a cloth.

But within Krobo culture, they represent far more than decoration, they are connected to identity, tradition, ceremonies and the stories passed down from one generation to another.
For generations, stories about the importance of beads have been passed down within Krobo communities. One connects the beads to a period of war involving the Krobo people.
“I was told that when our forefathers went to war, they fought with the beads the women were wearing around their waist. When the war became tense, that is what they used to hit their enemies, and they won. Because of that, the people of Krobo cherish beads so much.” Madam Mary Quao said.
Krobo bead culture consists of different types of beads such as k)li and zagba, each associated with particular traditions and occasions.

The role of beads in Dipo demonstrates how they can become part of significant moments in the lives of individuals while also serving as a means of preserving cultural practices.
“What I know is that beads are part of our culture. During the ceremony, the type of beads worn by the girl depends on the financial status of her parents”. Mrs. Ayeki Djangba said.
The significance of beads extends beyond rites of passage. They also occupy an important place in traditional leadership, where certain beads are associated with status, authority and identity.
But while beads remain visible in traditional spaces, their use is no longer limited to ceremonies and traditional setting. Today, beads are worn as accessories, incorporated into fashion and sold to people who may not necessarily be familiar with the history behind them.
Nana Ladj3 Yohin Queen mother of Dodowa Manya says, tradition is tradition and it has been there for ages, it is not idol worshiping so people should not be afraid for practicing their culture.
From stories of war and survival to rites of passage and traditional leadership, the beads continue to carry memories of the people who wear them.
